Know what every student needs, and what they can already play

One sheet per student, taken straight from their board's syllabus. Tick off every scale, hand and speed as you teach it, then spin the wheel for the ones they keep avoiding, in the lesson or at home.

Takes two minutes and needs no sign-up. Included in every TopMusicPro plan, or US$29 a year on its own after a 7 day free trial. Already a member, or paying for the tracker? Sign in.

Looking up a grade and spinning a wheel is free, always. No account, no card, nothing to cancel. Open the free tools. The tracker is the paid half: it is the one that remembers every student.

See it working

Both tools, in under three minutes

The free Finder first, then the sheet that remembers where all thirty of your students are up to.

Prefer to read? Everything it does is listed below.

Sound familiar?

The syllabus is not the hard part. Remembering where 30 students are up to is

Most of us keep it in our heads, in a notebook, or on a photocopied sheet that lives in the student's book and comes back covered in biscuit crumbs.

How it usually goes

  • You look up what the grade needs, again, in the middle of a lesson.
  • The same three scales get played every week and the rest never come up.
  • You cannot remember whether you taught that one hands separately or together.
  • Exam term arrives and two scales have never been touched.
  • A student moves up a grade and the whole list starts again from scratch.

How it goes with the tracker

  • Their full list is already there, taken from the board's own syllabus.
  • The wheel asks for what they have not played, not what they like.
  • Every hand and every stage is ticked where you left it last week.
  • You can see who is ready and who is not, at a glance, before exam term.
  • Change their grade and the new list appears, with their ticks intact.

How it works

Set up on Sunday, use it in Monday's lessons

Add your students

Type their names, or paste the export from your studio management software. First name and an initial is all it keeps, so no surnames and no birthdays.

Tick as you teach

Taught right hand, taught left hand, slow, hands together, up to speed, confident. Tick the last one and everything before it fills in by itself.

Spin in the lesson, or send it home

One tap and the wheel asks for a scale. Choose the whole list, only what they know, or only what they have never played.

Then send that student a link and they can spin the same wheel at home.

What's included

Built for a lesson in progress, not a spreadsheet after hours

A sheet that knows their grade

Every scale, arpeggio, chord progression and exercise their board asks for, with the octaves, the tempo and the hands it wants. Columns change to suit the row: a scale the syllabus wants hands together still gets a Taught right hand and Taught left hand column, because that is how it gets taught.

Tick a column heading to mark the whole studio, or one box for one student.

A spinner that knows the student

The wheel in the lesson is not a random scale generator. It is built from this student's own requirements, and you choose what goes on it: everything, only the ones they can play, or only the ones they have never touched.

Land on one, play it, tick it off without leaving the wheel. Students ask for it.

Send them home with the wheel

One link per student, and they spin the same wheel at home that you spun in the lesson: their grade, their scales, in the state you left it. No sign-in at their end, no account and nothing to install, because a ten-year-old will not be making one.

Set this week's list and leave it fixed, or let them turn scales off their own wheel. Either way nothing they do touches your sheet, so Monday's lesson starts exactly where you left it.

Update the link whenever you like and the address stays the same, so what they saved last term still opens. Turn it off and it stops working that moment.

  • One link each, with no sign-in for the student
  • Sends the wheel exactly as it is on their sheet
  • Fix this week's list, or let them choose
  • Nothing they do changes your sheet
  • Their name can be left off the page
  • Turn any link off whenever you want

Your own lists, for students who sit no exams

Add anything you want tracked: a scale outside the syllabus, a piece, aural work, theory. Exam rows get the taught-to-ready ladder. Pieces and aural get a simpler one, because a piece is not learnt hands separately at a metronome mark.

A student doing no exams at all can have a sheet made entirely of your own rows.

Sign in once with your email and your whole studio follows you to every device. No password to remember and nothing to install.

It keeps working when the wifi drops, which in a music room it will. Ticks queue up and go when the signal comes back, so a lesson never waits for a loading spinner.

Questions teachers ask

Can I try it before paying?

Yes, and without signing up for anything. Set up one student, tick what they can play and spin their wheel. You only reach a payment screen if you decide to keep it.

Do I need to be a TopMusicPro member?

No. It is US$29 a year on its own. If you are already a member on any plan from Lite upwards, you have it already, so sign in with the email your membership uses.

What happens to my students if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your students, their ticks and your own rows stay in your account, and they are all there the moment you come back.

The tracker itself stops opening until you do. The free half carries on as normal: looking up any grade, and both spinners, stay yours whether you pay or not.

Is the syllabus information actually right?

Every board here gave written permission, and each syllabus was typed up from that board's own published books rather than copied off a website. The AMEB lists, for instance, were checked line by line against their 2018 technical work books.

It is still worth checking the current syllabus for your student's exam. Boards reissue, and your examiner is the final word.

Which instruments does it cover?

Piano and keyboard today, which is where the exam lists are most detailed. Other instruments are on the way. In the meantime you can build your own list for any student on any instrument and track them the same way.

Does it work on an iPad in a lesson?

That is what it is built for. It works on a phone, an iPad or a laptop, it keeps working when the wifi drops, and your ticks catch up on their own when the signal comes back.

Can my students use it at home?

Yes. Send a student a practice link and they can spin their own wheel at home, with no sign-in and no account of their own. You choose whether the list is fixed for the week or whether they can turn scales off it.

Nothing they do at home changes your sheet, and you can turn the link off at any time. The link carries their first name, their grade and their scales, and nothing else: not your account and not another student.

What do you store about my students?

A first name and an initial, their board, syllabus and grade, and what you have ticked. No surnames, no dates of birth, and nothing a child enters themselves.

Pick one student and try it now

Two minutes, no sign-up, and you will have their whole list in front of you.
